Industry Training

TrainND Southwest is focused on preparing, training, and upskilling the workforce of North Dakota. Industry Training refers to the practical training in a company or an industrial environment that helps the students in developing the required skills which will help them in becoming a professional of the future. Training and development programs provide a host of benefits. They enhance employee performance, boost employee productivity, reduce employee turnover, and improve company culture.

Welding

_MG_3067.jpgBSC's Continuing Education (CE) provides a wide array of welding training and testing to local and regional companies. Training can be held on-site or at one of our state of the art welding shops on BSC's campus. CE can train and test in the following areas:
  • Shielded Metal Arc Welding
  • Gas Metal Arc Welding
  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding
  • Oxyacetylene Welding
  • Flux Cored Arc Welding

WELDING FAST TRACK

Looking for a career change? BSC's three-month welding certification course, typically runs September through December. Applicants may qualify for a Job Service Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) grant to cover tuition. Individuals will need to drop off, mail, email or fax their application and third party authorization form. Questions? WELDING READINESS PROGRAMS

There are three non-credit welding readiness tracks offered through TrainND Southwest that are comprised of classroom theory instruction and hands-on training. Content delivery is provided in multiple formats including lecture, class discussion, hands-on demonstrations, covering topics such as the study of safety, print reading, weld/welding symbols, and inspection and joint fit up.
 
Track 1: Advanced Manufacturing Welding-160 hours*
This 4-week course, offered each summer, provides training in Gas Metal Arc Welding (Pulse Spray Wire feed) and Flux Cored Arc Welding (dual shield) methods. These specific welding processes are used by all major advanced manufacturing companies in North Dakota and across the United States.
 
Track 2: Fast Track General Welding-300 hours*
This 8-week course, offered each summer, provides training on commonly used welding processes including Oxyacetylene Cutting, Shielded Metal Arc Welding (stick), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG), Gas Metal Arc Welding (wire), and Flux Cored Arc Welding (dual shield). These specific welding processes are used by all major companies engaged in advanced manufacturing, construction trades, energy development and production.
 
Track 3: Expanded Fast Track General Welding -360 hours
This expanded 12-week course, offered each September through December, provides a more in-depth training on commonly used welding processes covered in track 2.
 
Supplemental Instruction*
Students have the option of including supplemental professional development classes and/or forklift training to welding tracks 1 and 2.
 
Professional Development - 12 hours

Art of Effective Communication (2 hours)
Investigate different styles of communication. From understanding ways to devise strategies to avoid unnecessary conflict to adopting a toolbox to help improve effective communication, this program focuses on the fundamentals of communication to help employees be successful in the workplace and in everyday conversation.
 
Increasing Your Emotional Intelligence (2 hours)
Emotional intelligence is a useful trait to have in the workplace. Research shows that people who show high levels of emotional intelligence skills are stronger leaders, more effective decision makers, better at building relationships, increasers of team efficiency, and are well equipped to confront challenging issues and manage change.
 
Time Management (2 hours)
Different workers have different organizational and time management practices – but good time management is always essential. Employees who can prevent interruptions experience less stress than those who seek them. Time management behaviors like goal setting and prioritizing have been proven to have positive effects because they make employees feel in control, leading to fewer anxieties and greater job satisfaction.
 
Microsoft® Office Excel® 2019: Part 1 (2 hours)
Organizations all over the world rely on information to make sound decisions. The power of Microsoft® Office Excel® 2019 can help. Excel can help you organize, calculate, analyze, revise, update, and present your data in ways that will help the decision makers in your organization steer you in the right direction. It will also make these tasks much easier for you to accomplish, and in much less time, than if you used traditional pen-and-paper methods or non-specialized software. This course aims to provide you with a foundation for Excel knowledge and skills.
 
Microsoft® Office Word 2019: Part 1 (2 hours)
It's impossible to avoid word-processing software in many areas of the business world. In this course, you'll learn how to use Word to create and edit simple documents; format documents; add tables and lists; add design elements and layout options; and proof documents.
 
Microsoft® Office Outlook® 2019/2021: Part 1  (2 hours)
Email has become one of the most widely used methods of communication, whether for personal or business communications. In most organizations, large or small, email is the preferred form of communicating information amongst employees. In this course, you will use Outlook to send, receive, and manage email messages, manage your contact information, schedule appointments and meetings, create tasks and notes for yourself, and customize the Outlook interface to suit your working style.
Forklift Training - 8 hours
This course is designed to help learners choose, inspect, and operate a forklift in a safe way, creating a safe workplace free from potential hazards associated with their use.

As part of Continuing Education (CE) commitment to provide the highest quality of training possible, CE has partnered with Basin Electric Power Cooperative, Great River Energy, Tesoro Petroleum, Minnkota Power Cooperative, and Praxair to outfit a mobile welding lab. This state-of-the-art trailer is equipped with 6 welding booths available for training at your worksite. The trailer saves your company valuable travel time and money.

HVAC Training/Certification

To work in the Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) industry, technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of refrigerant-containing equipment must be certified under the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) section 608 of the Clean Air Act. Any person who repairs or services a Motor Vehicle Air Conditioning (MVAC) system for consideration (payment or bartering) must be properly trained and certified under the EPA section 609 of the Clean Air Act.
 

The EPA 608 and 609 training and certification course is quick and affordable. Students will have the opportunity to learn from a certified instructor with years of experience and knowledge. Training outcomes include:

  • Prepares students for Core Section of the EPA 608 certification exam along with, type I, II, III exams.
  • After passing the above exams, students will be eligible to take the universal certification exam, which allows you to service all types of systems.
  • EPA 609 training and certification teaches and tests technicians how to properly:
    • Recover and recycle refrigerant
    • Appropriate handling of refrigerants
    • The law, and why it must be done to protect the stratospheric ozone layer

Forklift Training/Certification

Training shall consist of a combination of:
  • Formal instruction (e.g., lecture, discussion, interactive computer learning, videos, written material),
  • Practical training (demonstrations performed by the trainer and practical exercises performed by the trainee)
  • Evaluation of the operator's performance in the workplace.

All operator training and evaluation shall be conducted by persons who have the knowledge, training, and experience to train powered industrial truck operators and evaluate their competence. Training outcomes include:
  • Recognize the differences between the Power Industrial Truck (PIT)/Forklift and the automobile.
  • Explain the different types of PITs.
  • Identify the hazards involved with Powered Industrial Trucks (PITs)
  • Identify truck controls and instrumentation: where they are located, what they do, and how they work.
  • Understand Engine or motor operation, and steering and maneuvering, including fork adaptation, operation, use, and limitations. 
  • Understand vehicle refueling and recharging of batteries.
  • Understand visibility concerns (including restrictions due to loading).  
  • Identify vehicle capacity, explain how to maintain vehicle stability, and describe vehicle limitations.
  • Perform vehicle inspections to identify potential safety concerns.
  • Understand the impact of surface conditions and load composition.
  • Understand load manipulation, stacking, and unstacking.
  • Understand operating instructions, warnings, and precaution for the types of truck the operator will be authorized to operate. 
  • Demonstrate proficient operator skills on a forklift.
