Certified Medication Assistant II
What is a Certified Medication Assistant II (CMA II)?
A Certified Medication Assistant II is able to deliver routine, regularly scheduled medication for individuals or groups of individuals with stable conditions which are administered on a routine basis and do not require determination of need, drug calculation, or dosage conversion. A CMA II can be employed in a setting where the licensed nurse is either scheduled regularly or not regularly including Skilled Nursing Facilities, Assisted Living Facilities and Basic Care Facilities.
Because this program receives funding from the U.S. Department of Labor, veterans and eligible spouses receive priority of service over non-covered persons. (20 CFR 1010)

Prerequisites and/or Requirements
Students must hold a North Dakota CNA license prior to registering for class and must be in good standing with the North Dakota Department of Health.
Essential physical requirements for the CMA II course are:
- Mandatory attendance
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
- 8-hour clinical practice session with minimal rest periods
- 32-hour clinical facility rotation
If the student has a temporary/permanent condition limiting his/her ability to perform the essential physical requirements, please contact the program manager. Class attendance is an essential part of the educational process of this training and is mandatory. Students may be dropped if attendance requirements are not met.
Students must provide a copy of the following items upon registration. Students who do not provide these items within three (3) business days of the class start date will not be able to attend class and may incur a fee to be transferred to the next available class:
- Printed proof of a negative TB test within the last 12 months.
- Proof of an approved one-dose or two-dose COVID-19 vaccination that includes a record of vaccine, the date of vaccine administration, lot number, and location of where the vaccine was administered.
- Proof of the seasonal flu vaccination (for classes beginning during the months of September through March).
Students will be required to adhere to the policies of the clinical facility regarding the COVID-19 vaccination. This is not a BSC requirement, but a requirement of the clinical facility. Exemption requests must be inquired upon and are subject to review and approval by the clinical facility.
TB testing, seasonal flu and COVID-19 vaccinations are provided by Bismarck-Burleigh Public Health or the UND Center for Family Medicine. Records must be brought to the BSC CE office three (3) business days before the first day of class or upon class registration.
Length of Program
The Certified Medication Assistant II course is an 80-hour course (40 hours of theory, 8 hours lab, 32 hours of clinical).
Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to administer:
- Oral, sublingual, and buccal medications
- Ear medications
- Eye medications
- Nasal medications
- Rectal medications and enemas
- Vaginal medications
- Skin ointments, topical medications, including patches and transdermal medications
- Metered hand-held inhalants and
- Unit dose nebulizers
Exams/Certifications
Class Testing
Individuals participating in the CMA II course are required to take, and pass, chapter exams after each subject is covered. Participants have two opportunities to pass each section before remediation is required, per the North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services. A passing score of 85% is required on all quizzes and the final exam.
CMA II License Exam
Students will be able to take the CMA II state exam after completing the coursework. Students will have two (2) attempts to pass the written exam.
Once a student has completed the course, they can apply for their CMA II license with the North Dakota Department of Health; there is a $25 application fee payable to the state at the time of registration and students must also have a copy of their class certificate of completion to apply.
Career Investment
At this time, this course is offered as a non-credit college class. Students do not need to apply to become a BSC student. The course cost is $825 and includes the cost of the book. Registration is due three (3) business days prior to the first day of class.
