Energy Services & Renewable Technician
BSC’s Energy Service & Renewable Technician program will prepare graduates for field service technician careers in the rapidly expanding energy industry. Students will study the technical processes through theory and hands-on activities with technician and operational skills utilized in renewable generation and conventional energy facilities.

The continued growth of the renewable energy sector requires knowledgeable and skilled workers prepared to work in solar fields, wind farms, and other areas of green energy. The Energy Services and Renewable Technician (ESRE) program at Bismarck State College prepares individuals for field service technical careers in the rapidly expanding energy industry.
Students will gain broad technician skill-sets required in the conventional and renewable energy industry and other industries that employ automated processes.

This program provides a broad background in energy production, electrical and mechanical fundamentals, equipment and systems, applied math, and safety practices.
Coursework emphasizes theory and hands-on applications of applied electronics, mechanics, hydraulics, electric motor control, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), SCADA, wind turbine systems, solar photovoltaic systems, and safe work practices. This program will also include extensive troubleshooting of the various systems covered throughout the curriculum.

This program is offered on the BSC campus in the National Energy Center of Excellence (NECE) building located at 1200 Schafer St. A limited number of students will be accepted to the program in the fall.
Prospective students should be prepared for the physical demands of the work associated with technician positions when considering this program. Typical industry entry-level position requirements include passing a physical exam, which may include: lifting 50+ pounds, climbing ladders, working in confined spaces, working at elevated heights, etc. When applying for jobs, applicants may also be required to pass a drug screen and an eye exam, including the ability to distinguish between colors accurately.
