The first of its kind regionally, the Mechanical Maintenance program prepares graduates to install, maintain and repair turbines, compressors, pumps, valves and other industrial production and processing equipment. High-demand jobs are found in the power or process industry, manufacturing, institutions such as schools and other enterprises that have complex, industrial machinery and equipment.

The Mechanical Maintenance Technology program at the BSC National Energy Center of Excellence prepares you for an exciting career at a power plant, refinery, ethanol facility, manufacturing company, or any other place that uses complex, industrial machinery.
Learn to use industrial-grade equipment while focusing on safe operating practices. Work with your hands to install, repair and maintain turbines, compressors, pumps, valves, and more. Coursework also covers welding and electronics.
Maintain and repair complex industrial machinery
A career as a Mechanical Maintenance Technician offers an exciting opportunity to have a wide variety of job duties each day. Mechanical Maintenance Technicians typically do not work shift work and hold positions in the power or process industry, manufacturing, or institutions such as hospitals and schools.
Be in demand
Maintenance and repair technicians are one of the fastest growing careers in North Dakota, with an expected growth of 14.4% by 20261.
Recent BSC MMAT graduates report 100% placement rates, with earnings averaging $38/hour2. Internship opportunities are available to students enrolled in this program.
Some of the responsibilities of technicians include:
- Installing, maintaining, and repairing turbines, compressors, pumps, valves, and other industrial production and processing equipment.
- Read blueprints and manufacturer's instructions and communicate effectively.
- Prevent problems and keep industrial machinery in optimal condition and readiness.
Graduates can earn a Program Certificate or an Associate in Applied Science degree. Students can also earn up to 8 American Welding Society (AWS) certifications, complete an OSHA 10 General Industry Training card, and become forklift certified.
The AAS can be completed in four semesters and consists of 51 credit hours of specialized courses and 15 credit hours of general education courses.
Students seeking the certificate complete the specialized skills courses in just three semesters, including four credit hours of general education.
Enrollment: A limited number of students will be enrolled in late August.

Mechanical aptitude and manual dexterity are important characteristics for workers in this trade. Good reading comprehension is also necessary to understand technical manuals.
