Temporary Health Accommodations

Courtesy services may be provided to students who need access to the classroom and/or campus environments because of a temporary health condition, hospitalization or pregnancy.

BSC’s Student Accessibility Office will attempt to assist students with temporary medical conditions in their efforts to remain enrolled in courses. It is the student's responsibility to follow the steps listed below. BSC cannot guarantee that services will be provided in all situations but will make all efforts to assist as possible.

Steps for Arranging Courtesy Services

  1. The student is expected to make their own arrangements for assistance whenever possible. Examples include having a friend drive the student to class or borrowing notes from a classmate.
  2. Students are responsible for contacting each of their faculty members regarding their absence from class, missed assignments, and course expectations.
    1. Students, or a relative of the student, can reach out to BSC’s Student Accessibility Office for help notifying faculty of a student’s absence due to a temporary medical condition or hospitalization if the medical condition prohibits you from contacting faculty members.
      1. This notification serves as a courtesy notice and does not constitute an excused absence.
    2. It is important to discuss the situation with student’s faculty members to determine the feasibility of remaining in the course if the student will be absent for an extended period of time (a week or longer).
    3. The student may contact BSC’s Academic Records Office at 701-224-5420 or bsc.records@bismarckstate.edu for information about the appeal process if it is necessary to withdraw from BSC after the last day to drop.
  3. If the student is unable to make their own arrangements for specific needs, the student can submit a Temporary Medical Conditions application to arrange for possible assistance. The student will also be asked to provide a supportive statement from the treating professional.
    1. This statement must be signed and on letterhead.
    2. The statement must identify the relevant limitations of the medical conditions such as “cannot walk more than 30 feet".
    3. The statement must include the approximate length of time the student will be impacted by the medical condition.
