Student Accessibility Accommodations at BSC

It is the student’s responsibility to contact BSC’s Student Accessibility Office and apply for academic accommodations. Students can apply online. Please ask the student to contact the Student Accessibility office (bsc.accessibility@bismarckstate.edu or 701-224-2496) before providing any accommodations if the student requests an accommodation in the classroom environment without providing an Accommodation Notification Letter from BSC’s Student Accessibility Office.

Accommodations provide qualifying students with access to course materials, learning environments, and assessment methods. Accommodations do not lower the academic standards of a course. Students receiving accommodations are expected to meet the same course requirements as all other students.

Extending Students’ Accommodated Time in Blackboard Ultra

On the Roster page, open a student's menu and select Accommodations.

In the panel, select the accommodations for the student:
  • Time limit accommodation: Students with a time limit accommodation have more time to finish their work during timed assessments. After you select this accommodation, specify the percentage of extra time that is needed to honor a time-limit accommodation.

Students with accommodations appear with an icon next to their names. The icon appears in the gradebook and roster. Students don't see the accommodations you've added.

The number of accommodations you've made appears in the settings for graded course items such as assignments and tests. Select the link to view the accommodations. Select View Roster to make changes.

Universal Design

Incorporating Universal Designed Instruction helps minimize the need for disability accommodations while improving access, usability, and catering to a variety of students’ learning styles; ultimately enhancing the educational experience for everyone.
Universal Design Ideas:
  • Post PowerPoints, handouts, and assignments in Blackboard before class.
  • Create accessible PDFs by starting with the text document and then saving it as a PDF to maintain accessibility.
  • Provide presentation visuals with large, bold fonts, and high contrast backgrounds.
  • Caption videos and online lectures.
