Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? It’s SpongeBob SquarePants, the incurably optimistic sea sponge! But for five days in April, he and his underwater friends will emerge on stage in Bismarck when the Bismarck State College (BSC) Theatre department presents “The SpongeBob Musical” April 6-10.

Based on the Nickelodeon program “SpongeBob SquarePants,” the musical tells the story of the impending eruption of Mt. Humongous threatening all of Bikini Bottom, until a most unexpected hero rises to take center stage. “The SpongeBob Musical” features Bikini Bottom’s best-known: SpongeBob, Sandy, Patrick, Squidward and more.

The production’s director, BSC Associate Professor of Theatre Dr. Danny Devlin, said that stumbling across “The SpongeBob Musical” was “sort of an accident.”

“I just wanted to concentrate my energies towards something bright and shiny and fun, and ‘The SpongeBob Musical’ fit the bill,” Devlin said. “SpongeBob is powered by chaos and optimism; by an absurdist glee in deconstructing self-seriousness; by an anarchic spark that exists within the child of us all.”

"The SpongeBob Musical" cast features a mix of BSC and local high school students, BSC alumni and community members familiar to the Sidney J. Lee Auditorium stage.

Premiering on Broadway at the Palace Theatre in 2017 and receiving 12 Tony nominations at the 2018 Tony Awards, "The SpongeBob Musical" features original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants, T.I., David Bowie, Tom Kenny and Andy Paley.

“The SpongeBob Musical” is appropriate for an audience of all ages. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Sidney J. Lee Auditorium, inside Schafer Hall, 1500 Edwards Ave, Bismarck. Reserved tickets can be purchased in advance online at bsctheatre.com. Reduced rate tickets are available for children, students, and BSC students, faculty and staff. Tickets can also be purchased at the door.
