Bismarck State College (BSC) announces the hiring of three assistant deans in the Automation, Energy, and Advanced Technology (AEAT) division in 2024. The positions are part of a recent academic restructure aimed at ensuring continued excellence in program delivery and workforce readiness.
In his new role, Jason Dockter leads several of BSC’s cutting-edge programs in the AEAT division, including Operations Management, Mechatronics, Energy Services, Industrial Automation, Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing), Geographic Information Systems, and Unmanned Aerial Systems (Drones). He brings more than 20 years of experience in education to BSC, having previously served as department chair of the technology and STEM education department at Valley City State University (VCSU) and as a technology education instructor at VCSU, Ashley Public School and Kulm Public School. He holds a Master of Education (M.Ed.) from VCSU and a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in education from Minnesota State University Moorhead.
Ashley Placek Olson brings diverse education and student support experience to her new role of overseeing the Lineworker, Electric Transmission, and Electric Power programs at BSC. Having previously served as a special education teacher and case manager at Bismarck Public Schools, she brings a background of leading teams, engaging community stakeholders, and fostering student success. She holds a Master of Science (M.S.) in special education from the University of North Dakota, an M.S. in exercise physiology from Minnesota State University, Mankato, and a B.S. in exercise science from the University of Mary.
Mitch McCoy brings a military and management background to his new role in overseeing the Petroleum Production Technology, Process Technology, Power Generation, Water and Wastewater Technology, Energy Management, and Mechanical Maintenance Technology programs at BSC. McCoy retired from the North Dakota Army National Guard in June 2024, after serving as First Sergeant of the 2-285th Assault Helicopter Company and holding roles as Flight Instructor and Quality Assurance Chief for the Army Aviation Support Facility in Bismarck. He holds a B.S. in business management from the University of Mary and has completed the U.S. Army Master Leaders Course and Sergeants Major Academy Phase I.
“The combined leadership expertise and passion for education of these three individuals elevates BSC’s innovative programs and further enhances student success,” says Alicia Uhde, dean of AEAT. “Their diverse backgrounds greatly enhance our ability to provide innovative programs that prepare students for success in high-demand industries.”
Greg Lugar, who was promoted from Energy faculty to assistant dean in October 2022, is the fourth assistant dean on the AEAT leadership team led by Uhde.
At BSC, the assistant deans play a pivotal role in designing and developing course schedules, collaborating with faculty to ensure high-quality academic programming, supervising the creation and implementation of new programs and curricula, and serving as champions for student success. Their responsibilities also include recruiting and supporting faculty through mentorship and professional development, contributing to the retention of high-quality faculty, and collectively supporting BSC students for successful careers or further academic pursuits.
