Bismarck State College student Ashlei Stanczyk (Bismarck, N.D.) has been named a 2021 New Century Transfer Scholar and awarded a $2,250 scholarship. BSC President Doug Jensen and BSC Vice President for Academic Affairs Dan Leingang surprised Stanczyk at her workplace with the news and the award earlier this month.

New Century Transfer Scholars are selected based on their academic accomplishments, leadership, activities, and how they extend their intellectual talents beyond the classroom. Over 2,000 students were nominated from more than 1,200 college campuses across the country. Only one New Century Transfer Scholar is selected from each state.

Stanczyk graduated from BSC in December 2020 with an Associate in Science and an Associate in Arts degree. She currently works full time at Starion Bank in Bismarck and is a weekly volunteer at Heaven’s Helpers Soup Café as well as at her church. This fall, Stanczyk will attend the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D., and double major in social work and psychology.

“BSC continues to attract amazing and talented students to the college in pursuit of their academic goals. We provide opportunities for engagement and so many students look to enhance their experiences by participating in service, leadership, and scholarship roles within organizations like Phi Theta Kappa,” says Leingang. “This recognition, especially from external groups such as The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, emphasize the high level of academic aptitude exhibited by BSC students.”

The program is sponsored by The Coca-Cola Foundation, the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, Phi Theta Kappa and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).

“We congratulate Ashlei for receiving this prestigious scholarship, and we are honored to partner with the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, The Coca-Cola Foundation and AACC to recognize her outstanding achievements,” said Phi Theta Kappa’s President and CEO Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner. “Scholarship programs like this are integral for creating opportunities for two-year college students to succeed and for putting college completion within reach.”

Stanczyk will be recognized for this honor at the AACC 2021 Virtual Conference in late May 2021.
