Bismarck State College (BSC) has hired Myron Schulz as the new director of athletics, replacing Buster Gilliss who retired in July after 30 years in the Mystics athletics program, both as coach and athletic director. Schulz is a familiar name and face in both Mystics and regional collegiate athletics.

“Mystics athletics has deep roots in our community, throughout the Mon-Dak Conference and even nationally with our national tournament appearances,” says BSC President Doug Jensen. “Myron also has strong roots and an impressive athletic record in our community. He will be a great fit to continue the tradition and expand athletics alongside our polytechnic mission at BSC.”

A Bismarck native, Schulz grew up less than a mile from the college campus and has fond memories of hanging out in the BSC Armory as a kid. After graduating from Century High School in 1983, Schulz earned his associate degree at BSC, then Bismarck Junior College, where he played baseball and football for the Mystics. He went on to obtain a BAS in physical education and social and behavioral science from the University of Mary and a master’s in health and human development from Montana State University (MSU).

Schulz has taught and coached at several high schools and universities in the region, including New Rockford High School, MSU and the University of Mary.

Starting as an assistant coach on the first University of Mary Marauder football team in 1988 and ascending to the helm as head coach in 1999, Schulz was an integral part of that program’s success for 23 out of the first 26 years of the program before retiring after the 2013 season. To this day, Schulz is the winningest head coach in Marauder history.

Schulz transitioned to the University of Mary’s sports and leisure management program director in 2014 where he taught for the last eight years.

Now returning to where it all began for Schulz, he says he’s happy to be back at his alma mater. “I’m really excited about BSC's vision for the future, both athletically and academically.”

Schulz officially took over the Mystics director of athletics position on Aug. 24.
