More than $1.3M in scholarships available to students in BSC STEM programs

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Bismarck State College (BSC) $1,368,264 in grant funding to support scholarships for BSC Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs and to research factors associated with retention in STEM courses.
Starting in Fall 2022, an estimated 250 Accomplish, Innovate, Motivate (AIM) scholarships will be awarded to approximately 138 students in more than 25 STEM-related academic programs over the next five years. Each scholarship is estimated at an average award of $3,600 per year ($1,800 per semester) toward the cost of tuition, books and other education-related expenses.
"These substantial scholarships are meant to help students financially so they can reduce the hours they work and dedicate more time to their studies so they can be successful in their program,” says BSC Polytechnic Program Outreach Director Alicia Uhde. “With BSC in-state tuition rates at approximately $5,000 per year, this makes a degree very affordable.”
Recipients who continue to meet the requirements of the scholarship will have their scholarships renewed each subsequent semester.
In addition to lessening their college financial burden, scholarship recipients will have a dedicated faculty mentor to provide one-on-one advising throughout their degree program. They will also receive assistance in creating their résumé, completing applications, researching and applying for additional scholarships, and more.
Scholarship recipients will be selected based on financial need, academic promise and declared field of study. Additional consideration will be given to individuals traditionally underrepresented in STEM careers, including but not limited to women, racial and ethnic minorities, individuals with a disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act, and first-generation college students.
Students applying for an AIM scholarship are required to submit an application and provide a history of academic success. Academic success will be based on one or more of the following: high school GPA of 2.5, official transcripts, appropriate ACT or SAT standardized test scores and/or the successful completion of required core courses for each scholarship discipline.
The AIM Scholarship program is coordinated by BSC Associate Professor of Process Technology Hamza Raheel, Assistant Professor of Agriculture, Technology and Natural Resources Marko Davinic, Assistant Professor of Economics Ginny Saiki, Assistant Professor of Psychology Charlotte Williams, Polytechnic Program Outreach Director Alicia Uhde and Academic Advisor Andrene Krein.
