The Bismarck State College Library will host the second of three BookTalk at BSC discussions exploring a “Journeys” theme on Sunday, Feb. 6. This discussion will examine the book “Wandering in Strange Lands: A Daughter of the Great Migration Reclaims Her Roots" by Morgan Jerkins.

BSC Assistant Professor of Psychology Dr. Charlotte Williams will lead the discussion of the 2020 nonfiction book that traces the author’s family history and seeks to understand the cultural effects of the Great Migration, a movement of six million black Americans to the North, Midwest and West between 1916 and 1970. She shares her insights into this historical journey through interviews, photos, and hundreds of pages of transcription. Jerkins was recently named a 2021 Forbes 30 Under 30 Leader in Media and a 2021 ASME NEXT Award winner.

The final 2022 BookTalk at BSC will be held on Sunday, March 6. Humanities instructor Dr. Brian Palecek will wrap up the series with the discussion of Jessica Bruder’s book “Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century.” Bruder is a writer, journalist, photojournalist, editor and educator based in Brooklyn, New York. “Nomadland” follows her experience traveling across the United States to learn about the lives of the American “nomads” who have hit the road in late-model RVs, travel trailers and vans to find both work and community. She journeys alongside the migrant laborers who call themselves “workampers” to understand their stories more intimately.

BookTalk at BSC is the BSC Library’s annual book discussion series and is free and open to all. All discussions take place in the BSC Library, 1400 Schafer St., in Bismarck, from 1-3 p.m.

BookTalk at BSC is funded by the BSC Library and the Warren and Rose Marie Henke Memorial Library Endowment. The books can be borrowed from libraries or purchased from booksellers.
