This summer, Bismarck State College is offering a 12-week Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course May 17 to August 6, for anyone age 16 and older looking to join the workforce as an EMT or to begin the pathway to a career as a paramedic, firefighter or other emergency responder.

“The EMT class is the starting point for a variety of emergency responder careers,” says BSC EMS/Paramedic Program Director Kelli Sears. “This summer shortened session makes the training more do-able for those looking to work on rural ambulance crews and there is a real need in those communities.”

Typically a fall or spring 16-week course, the 12-week summer EMT course is limited to 20 students with sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 10 p.m. Coursework includes basic anatomy and physiology, airway management, medical and trauma emergency management, and EMS operations in conjunction with hands-on, skill-based training. Students train in a high-tech ambulance simulator and are required to complete two 12-hour ambulance shifts and one 12-hour emergency room shift outside of class time.

“This summer program is unique because it is only 12 weeks, getting trainees into the workforce sooner. It’s also unique in that students as young as 16 years old can get a head start on their training,” says Sears.

The summer course can be taken for credit or as a non-credit program. The registration deadline has been extended to May 10. Learn more about the EMT course and apply at bismarckstate.edu/EMTapplication
