Bismarck State College (BSC) Theatre program presents Nick Dear’s psychological adaptation of “Frankenstein,” Oct. 20-23. Directed by Daniel Walstad, the show will run Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Sidney J. Lee Auditorium on the BSC campus.

This stage adaptation of Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel is told from mostly from The Creature’s perspective and focuses on the psychology of The Creature’s experiences rather than the science experiments, which differs from other stage adaptations.

“We watch The Creature learn about things such as hate, kindness, cruelty, love, revenge, hope, truth, and how to lie; all things that he has learned from watching and listening to humans,” says Walstad who is making his BSC directorial debut with this production.

In addition to several returning and debuting cast members, BSC alumni Frank Vondra has returned to this production as the sound designer/composer.

“In Nick Dear’s version of Frankenstein, the music and sound texture become a very important invisible character, which greatly enhances the storytelling. Frank has done a beautiful job weaving his original sounds throughout the production,” Walstad says.

The 17-member cast of “Frankenstein” includes BSC students Max Wild as The Creature, Adam Michal as Victor Frankenstein, Payton Bergman as Gretel, Lane Kassian as Client, and Kiana Krueger as Prostitute 3, Ann Main as Gustav, Paige Jung as Klaus, Chase Thorenson as De Lacey, Patrick Watson as Felix, Veronika Linstrom as Agatha, Alayna Elits as Female Creature, Kaitlin Collins as Elizabeth Lavenza, Sean Pietrowski as Monsieur Frankenstein and Abigail Nicholson as Rab. BSC alumni Margaret Brink has been cast as William Frankenstein and Alyssa Lechler as Ewan. Melissa Westphal joins the cast from the Bismarck-Mandan theater community as Prostitute 2.

Assisting Walstad is scenic/lighting designer and technical director Dean Bellin, stage manager Kaity Garcia and assistant stage manager Mina Good Eagle.
