Bismarck State College Theatre presents Kate Hamill’s cheeky and energetic retelling of Jane Austin’s beloved classic novel, “Pride and Prejudice,” Dec. 9-12. Directed by theater artist, Emmalee Riegler, the show will run Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in Sidney J. Lee Auditorium on the BSC campus.

The story is set in early 1800s England and follows Elizabeth (Lizzy) Bennet and her four sisters. Their mother, Mrs. Bennet, wishes to see each of her daughters well married in order to secure the Bennet estate. Witty and independent Lizzy, however, has no desire to marry.

When a rich gentleman, Mr. Bingley, and his best friend, Mr. Darcy, arrive in town, Mrs. Bennet sees her opportunity. Her eldest daughter, Jane, and Mr. Bingley swoon over each when they meet for the first time at a public ball, but for Lizzy and Mr. Darcy, it’s the start of a frustrating relationship.

“Austen paints the simple incidents of average human life with such insight and sincerity that we all see ourselves in her characters,” said Riegler. “We sympathize as Lizzy and Darcy struggle to overcome first impressions, gossip and miscommunication. They must recognize their own faults and shortcomings before they finally recognize one another as equal partners. Their trials are universal.”

Reserved seat tickets can be purchased in advance online at bsctheatre.com. Tickets can also be purchased at the door. Questions about the production can be directed to bsc.theatre@bismarckstate.edu.
