Designers battle it out on stage for supreme creative title

Shortcuts
The stage is set for Shortcuts, a real-time design battle showcasing creative skills and pitting faculty against students and agencies against industry. While the hope is that things don’t get physical, spectators will have the chance to cheer on their favorite designer on Monday, April 23 in a live, fast paced design battle where only the strongest survive.

Shortcuts gives the audience a sneak peak of the creative process designers use while quickly solving problems using Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign software.

Like any true fight, Shortcuts is comprised of three rounds. Fights will be moderated and color commentary will be provided by veteran creatives Jeff Eslinger (North Dakota Association of Counties) and Tait Sundstrom (Sund Design).

The first 30-minute round consists of two design teams, Sommer Jacob (Studio North) and Arista Bergquist(Mann Signs) vs. Kevin Tengesdal (Blue Pine Design) and Colleen Klamm (Paradise Screen Printing) fighting for supreme creative dominance in a monstrous Photoshop battle. Next, two illustrators Blake Kaul (Fancy Panda Design) and Ashley Schuster (New Rockford Transcript) will go head-to-head in a 15-minute round inspired by Von Glitschka’s 5 minute logo, where the audience will brainstorm the logo they will need to create. In the final 30-minute round, BSC faculty Sean Thorenson, Tom Marple and Jason Lueder will tackle students McKenzie Miller, Witney Nielsen and Larree Janssen in a Photoshop challenge, combining required text and images to create a final masterpiece.

Battles begin at 7 p.m. in the BSC National Energy Center of Excellence Bavendick Stateroom. Concessions will be sold with proceeds benefitting the BSC Graphic Design and Communications student club. Video and special effects will be provided by Dusty Anderson.

This design experience is more than just graphic design; it is a combination of art, networking, community and of course, epic creative battles. No one will be saved by the bell on this night.
