The United States is on track to become the world’s top oil producer by 2019 at the latest, thanks largely to the country’s shale oil boom. Development in places like the Bakken in North Dakota has upended world markets, and U.S. output may exceed 11 million barrels of oil per day by late 2018.

“U.S. shale growth is very strong, the pace is very strong ... The United States will become the No.1 oil producer sometime very soon,” International Energy Administration Executive Director Fatih Birol told Reuters.
