Presentation explores WWI through the music

Published: Oct 26 2018
Bismarck State College professor of history Dr. Perry Hornbacher will present on the music of World War I on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. in LEA Hall, room 204 on the BSC campus. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Nov. 11, 2018, marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War. Audience members will explore and experience World War I through Hornbacher’s presentation, “Experiencing WWI through Music” from “I Didn’t Raise My Boy to Be a Soldier” and “Over There.”

The music of WWI offers a unique perspective of history to better reflect and interpret the attitude of the day. By using the songs that made up the soundtrack for the war and the messages within them, we can see various perspectives—from early open calls to stay out of the war, to patriotic calls for support and even practical advice.

Hornbacher is a Bringing Humanities to Life Fellow at BSC and this presentation is part of his research project.
