Bismarck State College has maintained its position as the third largest college in the North Dakota University System with 3,778 students enrolled this fall – a 1 percent increase over last year. Freshman numbers are up 6 percent.

North Dakotans make up 82 percent of the student population at BSC, up almost 2 percent from last year.

“These numbers are cause for celebration, considering the number of area high school graduates has been down the past few years,” says BSC President Larry C. Skogen. “What they show us is that more students are seeing the value BSC offers. Small classes, great faculty, affordable tuition and dozens of technical and transfer programs mean BSC students have more options. ”

Part-time enrollment rose 3 percent – a reflection of both a strong job market and an increase in early entry/dual credit students. This fall, 604 high school students enrolled in classes through BSC that provide them with both high school and college credit.

“We find that when unemployment is low and wages are strong, students will pursue an education on a part time basis and keep their good paying jobs” says Dr. Dan Leingang, BSC Vice President for Academic Affairs. “And we can tailor a plan to help them meet their academic goals while maintaining their employment.”

The programs with the highest enrollment are Energy Management (where students earn a four-year bachelor of applied science degree), Power Plant Technology, Practical Nursing and Electric Power Technology. Other programs with significant numbers this fall include Process Plant Technology, Associate Degree Nursing, Electrical Transmission Systems Technology and Cybersecurity & Computer Networking. More than 1,100 students are completing their general education requirements in a variety of majors in order to transfer on to a four-year institution.
