A $10,000 annual grant from the Bismarck-based Rockstad Foundation will allow Bismarck State College faculty, staff and students a chance to pursue a wide array of community and global pursuits that fulfill the Rockstad Foundation’s commitment to “supporting a world of mutual trust and respect through acts of human kindness and leadership development.”

This annual grant is designed to support “the research, study, publication, or demonstration of skills related to the Bismarck State College areas of study listed in the Catalog that support the development of high-quality education, workforce training, and enrichment programs reaching local and global communities.”

That broad definition allows BSC to engage in projects across the academic and humanitarian horizon, according to BSC Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Dan Leingang. “To have this range within a gift this generous means our people and students can dive into projects that are truly meaningful to them – whether that’s addressing food insecurity in our region or educational access in a developing country. This is an exciting gift for us, and we are incredibly grateful to the Rockstad Foundation,” says Leingang.

The Rockstad family owned Dan’s Super Market, Inc., for many years, establishing a tradition of giving back to the communities it served. The Rockstad family first became involved with BSC in the 1960s and 1970s when they established the Jane Grey Stewart Scholarship for Theatre and Art.

“This affiliation between Rockstad Foundation and BSC will, through education and projects, positively impact lives and livelihood in our community. The affiliation will strive to be an example of education and understanding helping our community members recognize the importance of being good stewards to our neighbors, to our world and to nature,” says Terrance M. Rockstad.

Moving forward, a BSC advisory panel will meet annually to review applications and award one or more fellowships, depending on the applications. BSC grant applicants can choose from four areas:
  • Teaching/curricular development projects: Proposals might include the development and teaching of a new area of expertise to be shared with colleagues on and off campus. The impact must extend beyond Bismarck State College and clearly benefit the public good.
  • Scholarly/creative projects: This area might include substantive work on a manuscript or major new research or projects in the creative areas, such as sustained work on performances or exhibitions.
  • Service projects: Projects involving a substantive idea that would improve an existing community or regional program or create something new at Bismarck State College.
  • Combination projects: Proposals combining any of the three other types may be submitted. It should be clear in the proposal how the types are integrated for the project.

“We live in a time of possibility, a time to create thinking leadership by creating an environment of enthusiasm, appreciation and high aspirations. This will accomplish a lot,” Rockstad says. “BSC and the Rockstad Foundation believe in the importance of life-long learning in order to advance wealth of knowledge for personal growth and for our community and the world we all live on.”
