Bismarck State College Theatre opens its season with a dramatic comedy Oct. 24-27. A daring journey into the world of Dungeons & Dragons, Qui Nguyen’s “She Kills Monsters” runs Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Sidney J. Lee Auditorium on the BSC campus.

“She Kills Monsters” tells the story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly’s refuge.

Filled with '90s pop culture references that were the background noise of her young sister's adolescence, the play touches on a number of themes.

“This show is about a lot of things: growing up, grief, family ties, action adventure, identity,” says Danny Devlin, the production’s director and BSC assistant professor of theater. “The theme that interests me the most is based around theatre’s, and Dungeons & Dragons’, capacity for developing a community. Agnes finds her community in the adventuring group that sets out to slay the Tiamat and save the Lost Souls of Athens – just as the cast and crew of this show have found their community in each other and those attending will find a community in the audience.”

“She Kills Monsters” cast members are BSC students Naomi Chaffee, Alyssa Lechler, Stephen Loftesnes, Matt Masse, Cullen Mitzel, Drew Pengilly, William Ring, and Trey Zent  (all of Bismarck), Kennedy Sundsbak (Hazen), Robert Day (Mandan), Shaylyn Lefor (Lefor), Alisha Letzring (New Salem), Ryann Steiner (Dickinson), and Kayti Preston (Doylestown, Ohio). Also in the cast is BSC alum Robert Day (Mandan).

Assisting Devlin is scenic/lighting and technical director Dean Bellin and stage manager Maryn Cabinaw (Boise, Idaho).
