As employment fair opens, market favors people seeking work

The jobs crunch is continuing to tighten in the Bakken, and with it wages are on the rise.

That is the backdrop Wednesday for Williston’s twice-annual job fair, put on by Job Services ND, as it seeks to help area companies fill some of the 989 job openings that have been listed with that agency.

Job posts now exceed active resumes by 2-to-1, according to figures from Job Services ND.

While wages for a few categories have gone down, the overall wage picture shows an average 6 percent rise for the first quarter, year over year, which has bumped several categories above average.

The hottest sectors:
• Oil and Gas Extraction — 47 percent above average
• Utilities — 34.5 percent
