Transferring College Credits

Bismarck State College is continuously working to make transfer easier.  Many students attend BSC with the intention of transferring to a four year college or university and many students who are just starting at BSC have attended other colleges and universities.

Accepted Credits

BSC accepts undergraduate courses from colleges or universities which are recognized by the United States Department of Education from regionally accredited organizations and nationally recognized agencies except for remedial/developmental/preparatory*, graduate, or continuing education.  (* Some remedial/developmental/preparatory courses may meet pre-requisite requirements.)

Credit granted by another institution for credit by exams or credit granted for life experience will not be evaluated as transfer credit.

BSC does not evaluate transfer courses that are withdrawn or in progress.

Additional Information:
412.0 Transfer Credit (Effective Fall 2023)

Course Equivalencies

Transfer courses are evaluated by reviewing course catalog descriptions.

Courses that are at least 75 percent comparable in nature, level, and content offered at BSC may be given a direct equivalent.  Courses that do not have a direct equivalent may be given generic general education or elective credit.

Students may also use the Transfer Evaluation System (TES) to see how courses transfer to BSC.

Transfer GPA

A minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA is required to earn a degree at BSC. Transfer credits may affect this.

Transfer grades (A, B, C, D, F) are computed in the student’s BSC cumulative GPA.

Credit Hours

BSC does not limit the number of undergraduate credits that can be transferred.

The number of transfer credits granted per course will not exceed the number granted by the originating institution.
  • The conversion of quarter hours to semester hours is 0.667 for each quarter hour.
  • Clock/contact hours may be accepted when the transcript key contains credit conversion.

Military Credits

BSC may award credit for military training programs.  Appropriate department faculty make the final determination.
