Description

The Mathematics program at BSC provides the student with a solid foundation in mathematics. Instruction focuses on analysis, problem solving, and real-life application of mathematical principles. The curriculum plan addresses both theoretical and applied mathematics. Most mathematics courses require use of graphics calculators and/or computer software.

Preparation

Those planning a career in mathematics must have good reasoning ability, persistence, and the ability to apply basic principles to new problems. Mathematicians should be good communicators because they often discuss problems with non-mathematicians. High school students should study as much math as possible and develop a strong background in science.

Requirements

Completion of the suggested mathematics curriculum leads to an Associate in Science degree.

Bismarck State College has many cooperative, articulation, or transfer agreements with postsecondary institutions both inside and outside of the North Dakota University System. Some of these agreements are established to allow students to remain on campus as they complete their bachelor’s degree. In all cases, students seeking to transfer after completing a degree at BSC should consult the academic catalog of their destination college and work with their academic advisor to plan for this transition.

Career Opportunities

Many mathematicians work in communications, technology, data processing, insurance, technical consulting, chemical and pharmaceutical research and manufacturing, physics, aircraft manufacturing and development, engineering, astronomy, and space exploration. They also teach in high schools, colleges, and universities and do research and development in any industry.

Career possibilities: actuary, teacher, statistician, data scientist, systems analyst, market research analyst, economist, financial analyst-advisor, tax administrator, computer programmer, and computer software engineer.
