Academic Standing

Academic Warning, Probation and Suspension

Bismarck State College is committed to the academic success of every student.  The college will monitor a student’s grades and issue an appropriate warning if grades are inadequate.  A student’s academic standing, which is based on term and cumulative grade point average (GPA), is determined at the end of each semester after final grades have been posted in CampusConnection.

Poor academic performance could result in being placed on one of the following academic standings:
  • Academic Warning
  • Academic Probation
  • Academic Suspension
Refer to the Bismarck State College policy for a complete description of each level of academic standing: BSC Policy – Academic Standing

Bismarck State College keeps students informed of their academic standing by printing a statement on the student’s transcript, as well as sending correspondence directly to the student.

Note:  Financial aid status is not the same as Academic Standing. Please review Financial aid satisfactory academic progress for more information.
Academic Warning
Academic Warning indicates that the student did not achieve a term and/or cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 or higher for the term.  This can occur regardless of the student being a first year, transfer or continuing student.

If placed on Academic Warning, the student should review and complete the following:
  • Meet with their academic advisor or the Mystic Advising and Counseling Center to discuss an academic plan to help recognize and eliminate problems that may be hindering positive academic achievement While the student is eligible to continue enrollment at BSC, it is important to begin to take steps to improve their GPA.
Failure to achieve a 2.00 term and/or cumulative GPA in the next term of enrollment can affect:
  • Academic standing (student will be placed on Academic Probation)
  • Graduation eligibility (Cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher is required for graduation)
  • Extra-curricular activity eligibility requirements.

If placed on Academic Probation, the student should review and complete the following:

  • Meet with their academic advisor or the Mystic Advising and Counseling Center to discuss an academic plan to help recognize and eliminate problems that may be hindering positive academic achievement   While the student is eligible to continue enrollment at BSC, it is important to begin to take steps to improve their GPA.

Students receiving a 2.00 or higher term GPA will be allowed to remain on Academic Probation until they improve their cumulative grade point average (GPA) to a 2.00 or higher.
