Assessment of Student Learning

Assessment is an ongoing process aimed at understanding and improving student learning.  It is a key indicator of institutional effectiveness and a vehicle for improvement.  The general steps of the assessment cycle are to:
  • Determine expectations or learning outcomes
  • Determine appropriate criteria and standards for learning quality
  • Gather, analyze, and interpret evidence to determine performance levels
  • Use the resulting information to document, explain, and improve performance.
The assessment asks faculty and staff to think about the following:
  • What should students be learning?
  • What are students actually learning?
  • What should we be doing to facilitate student learning?
Answering these questions enables faculty and staff to build stronger courses and programs. It also helps improve communication on campus, assists in making better academic and administrative decisions, and supports strategic planning.
